Downtown Tulsa to Host Park(ing) Day Event Sept. 15; Businesses to Offer Pop-Up Parks, Public Spaces in Place of Parking Spots
(Tulsa, OK) – On Friday, September 15, on-street parking spaces in Downtown Tulsa will be transformed into urban parklets from 1 to 4 p.m. to celebrate Park(ing) Day 2023.
The annual event is organized by the Downtown Tulsa Partnership (DTP), PartnerTulsa (TAEO), and the City of Tulsa’s Urban Design Studio.
These pop-up parks and public spaces aim to encourage people to think about the importance of public spaces in enhancing urban environments. Park(ing) Day is a global, open-source event that inspires communities to reimagine metered parking spaces.
“Park(ing) Day has become a cherished tradition for our organization,” said Emily Scott, Director of Planning and Vitality for the Downtown Tulsa Partnership. “It’s a day that transcends asphalt and traffic, reminding us that our cities are not just thoroughfares for automobiles but canvases for creativity and community. This event, in its third year with our involvement, showcases the infinite possibilities of urban spaces when they are reclaimed for non-auto uses.”
In Tulsa, this event offers a unique opportunity for organizations to transform a small part of Downtown, kick-starting a critical discussion about how public spaces are created and how we can improve the quality of Downtown streets for the long term. During the event, the public is invited to visit each pop-up installation and vote for their favorite activation following the QR codes posted at each participating parking stall.
This year’s participating groups include:
- SCRAPS & OU Urban Design Studio
- Tulsa Global District
- Tulsa Regional Tourism
